Institute for Early Metabolic Evolution is a private institute founded by Katsumi Matsuura, Professor Emeritus of Tokyo Metropolitan University, for the study of energetics, ecology, and evolution of Bacteria and Archaea with a special interest in electron transfers through carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, and iron in the chemosynthetic and photosynthetic microbial communities in Nakabusa hot springs. The purpose of the study is to elucidate the early evolution of those electron transfers and their interactions. A part of the study is conducted at the Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI) of Tokyo Institute of Technology, as a collaboration with Dr. Shawn E. McGlynn, and also a collaboration with Dr. Shigeru Kawai at Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).
